NYC Compost Givebacks:

Free Compost and Discounted Compost Bins Sales!

The NYC Compost Project holds several compost “givebacks” throughout the year. Compost made from leaves and chipped Christmas trees collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation is given back to New York City residents for free. Finished compost can be mixed into flower and vegetable beds, blended with potting soil to revitalize indoor plants, or spread on the lawn as a fertilizer.

Members of QBG’s Compost Project, along with NYC Compost Project staff and Master Composter volunteers, are on hand at Queens’ compost givebacks to answer questions, help shovel compost, and share advice. Residents are encouraged to bring their own strong containers, such as sand bags and pails, and shovels in order to take away an unlimited amount of top-quality compost (while supplies last). Nonprofit and community organizations may use pickup trucks. Compost givebacks are not open to landscapers or other businesses; vehicles with commercial license plates will be not permitted to enter the event site.

In addition to free compost, home compost bins are also available at a discounted rate. These bins, which normally retail for $70 or more, may be purchased by NYC residents for $20. Bins may also be purchased throughout the year at the City’s botanical gardens. To purchase one in Queens, call QBG’s Compost Project at 718.539.LAWN(5296) for more information.

NYC compost givebacks take place at Spring Creek Composting Facility, on the Brooklyn/Queens border; Soundview Composting Facility in the Bronx; and Fresh Kills Composting Facility on Staten Island. Please note: There is no compost for pickup at Queens Botanical Garden.

Check back here for dates and times of future compost givebacks or visit http://www.nyccompost.org/program/givebacks.html.
