Programs for Groups of Seniors

Queens Botanical Garden has thirty years of experience creating educational and cultural programs that inspire and engage seniors. Seniors can either visit the Garden for the program or the program can be brought to them.

On-site programs cost $250 plus the per-person materials fee indicated with each program. Off-site programs cost $350 plus the per-person materials fee. To enroll your group of seniors, call the Education Department at Queens Botanical Garden at 718-886-3800, ext. 230.

Terrariums: Participants learn about the history and care of terrariums and how to choose suitable small houseplants and closed containers. Each participant will create a terrarium to bring home.  $10 per person

Beauty From Bulbs-Indoors and Outdoors: Depending on the season, this program covers the basics of growing tender and hardy bulbs and how to force bulbs for indoor cheer.  Each participant will plant bulbs in a container to bring home. $8 per person

Growing Together-Grocery Store Gardening: Learn to grow your own exotic houseplants from the many unusual and interesting ethnic fruits and vegetables found in our markets today. The origin and history of food plants are discussed, along with appropriate plant care.  Participants will plant seeds and/or seedlings of various foods that they can take home.  This program can be specific to your clients’ culture if requested. $5 per person

Creating a Mini Landscape:  Learn the steps in designing and planting a dish garden.  Participants select and create either a rainforest or a desert theme to take home. $10 per person

Asian Dish Garden: Learn about the significance of Asian landscapes and how it differs from the history and design of western gardens.  Each participant makes a mini-landscape with plants and decorations representing principles of an Asian garden. $10 per person

Make Scents of Plants:  Learn why flowers have an aroma and explore diverse fragrant roots, stems, leaves and spices to make a sachet to bring home. Education staff can customize this workshop for special populations such as the visually impaired. $5 per person

Flower Arranging: Participants learn about flower types, treatments, color and balance and how to create their own design in arrangements that last.  Participants will make their own arrangement to take home. Herbal flowers, $5 per person; cut fresh flowers, $8 per person

Starting Flowers, Vegetables and Herbs From Seeds: This is a step-by-step demonstration of how to grow plants from seed.  Each participant has the opportunity to plant a propagation box with two kinds of seeds to take home. $5 per person

Bees and Honey Tasting:  Learn why bees are important in the Garden and how honey is made.  Beekeeper’s equipment will be displayed and explained.  A video will be presented showing how bees create their hive and make honey. Each participant will enjoy sampling the honey made by bees in our own Bee Garden. $3 per person  (or no additional fee if honey is not sampled)

Houseplant Arrangement:  Learn how to combine plants that have similar light, water and soil requirements.  Participants will then plant items selected in an attractive container.  $10 per person
