Education

Besides serving as a site for QBG’s innovative education programs, the Intergenerational Garden & Food Pantry Project has formed partnerships with two schools that offer students deeper experiences.

John Bowne High School

Students enrolled in Bowne’s agriculture program also work in the Intergenerational Garden in many capacities that augment their academic studies and gives them a real world perspective about subjects such as careers, environmental stewardship, and culture.

Working with senior citizen gardeners, these enthusiast students help out with gardening tasks while sharing stories about their different cultures and histories.

Beyond gaining on-the-job horticulture experience, students learn business and entrepreneurial skills with specific projects such as collecting, marketing, packaging and distributing a seed collection.

Lowell School

QBG is honored to work with this excellent school and their terrific special needs students. Our work incorporates and reinforces their in-class learning with hands-on projects such as composting.  In Spring 2013, the students created and planted a butterfly garden near the Intergenerational Garden entrance that has been welcoming a steady stream of butterflies!
