Flushing, NY—September 5, 2013—Queens Botanical Garden invites all to a free performance by the Chamber Ensemble of The Orchestra of St. Luke’s on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 4 pm in the Garden’s Cherry Circle.  The concert will take place during QBG’s Free Hours and there is no admission charge.  The concert is part of the Orchestra’s five-borough Subway Series, performing free one-hour outdoor concerts in all parts of the city.  The series will also host a food drive for New York City’s hungry in partnership with City Harvest. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to the performance for collection.

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s is a beloved New York City- based chamber orchestra which performs at several area venues, including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and others.   The orchestra is engaged throughout the year in a number of artistic collaborations with other New York City cultural organizations, and serves each summer as the orchestra-in-residence at the Caramoor Festival. It was founded in 1974, has premiered over 100 works, and has an extensive discography that includes three GRAMMY®-award winning recordings. The program for this concert is called “Brass Gardens” and features music for brass quintet ranging from Elizabethan courtly dances to American ragtime classics.

Now serving New York City for more than 30 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, and is dedicated to feeding hungry New Yorkers.  Food rescue is the practice of safely retrieving excess edible food that would otherwise go to waste, and distributing it to those in need.  City Harvest is the bridge that links the food industry and private donations with the more than 600 organizations and agencies that help to feed the thousands of New Yorkers who live in poverty.

St. Luke’s partners with the MTA throughout the year to offer ticket discounts and other benefits; at the free Subway Series concerts, attendees can receive a complimentary 4 Seasons DVD from St. Luke’s Collection when showing their valid MetroCard.

St. Luke’s Subway Series is supported, in part, by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

We look forward to seeing you at this special event.  Bring a blanket to sit on and pack a snack or enjoy a gourmet ice cream sandwich while you listen to beautiful music! Melt Bakery will sell their delectable ice cream inventions before and after the concert.
