Vision

To be the botanical garden noted for presentation of plants as unique expressions of cultural traditions.

Mission

The Queens Botanical Garden, a living museum serving the most ethnically diverse county in the United States, is committed to presenting collections, education and research initiatives and programs that demonstrate environmental stewardship, promote sustainability, and celebrate the rich cultural connections between people and plants.

The Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. The Garden serves over 300,000 visitors each year; a visitor survey reveals that 75% of all visitors speak a language other than English at home. This astounding fact underscores the importance of the cultural vision adopted in 1997 and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.

The Education Department of Queens Botanical Garden offers public and school programs throughout the year expressing QBG’s mission and vision of cultural connection to plants and ecological sustainability. Education programs at the Garden include:

·         On-site school workshops & tours including video teleconferencing of programs

·         Off-site programs for children and families at festivals, street fairs, holiday events, etc.

·         Off-site programs in schools or other facilities

·         On-site weekend programs and workshops

·         Big events such as Arbor Day and Gardening Day

·         Children’s Garden

·         Teacher training and professional development seminars

Part-time (P/T) instructors are responsible for presenting both on-site and off-site environmental tours and workshops to area school children. P/T instructors may assist with setting-up and organizing materials for school children’s classes or other programs, breaking down and storing materials after classes or public programs, assisting with duplication and collation of education materials. Where feasible, P/T instructors may present or facilitate public programs for seniors, adults, and children.
