Admissions Policy at Queens Botanical Garden

We’ve developed this series of questions and answers to help our friends and visitors understand the new admission policy which will be starting in April 2010. We hope that you find this document helpful and informative.

Admissions Policy in Chinese          Admissions Policy in Korean            Admissions Policy in Spanish

Beginning Saturday April 3, 2010, Queens Botanical Garden will implement a mandatory admission fee.
This fee will be $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students with ID and children over 3 years of age. The admission fee will be collected from April – October. This means that from April 3 – October 31, 2010, you must pay an admission fee to enter the Garden.

We are offering free admission during certain periods.
The Garden will be free everyday from November 1 – March 31. The Garden will also be free throughout the year every Wednesday from 3 – 6 pm and Sunday from 4 – 6 pm. As a polling place, we will be open free on all election days as well.

Why has the Garden decided to charge an admission fee?
This decision does not come easily or without considerable deliberation. As you may know, many cultural organizations in Queens and beyond have been forced to take drastic measures due to the downturn in the economy and reductions in funding. Beyond these sobering issues, the Garden needs to stand on its own two feet and take a greater role in supporting itself. Collecting an admission fee will allow us to do just that.

Who made the decision to charge admission?
After many months of study and discussion with local leaders, the Garden officially requested permission to charge admission from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Fall 2009. The Garden received approval and the Board of Trustees adopted the policy in December 2009.

I can’t afford to pay the admission fee every day – what can I do?
The Garden does not wish to deny access to anyone; however, we must be able to maintain our 39 acres for the safety and enjoyment of all of visitors. If you live in the 11354 or 11355 zip codes, you may purchase a Community Access Pass (see below for more information). You may become a member of the Garden (see below for more information). If neither of these options is available to you, we invite you to visit nearby Kissena Corridor Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park; both are a short walk from the Garden.

I live in the 11354 or 11355 zip codes – what’s a Community Access Pass?
The Community Access Pass (CAP) is available to residents within the 11354 and 11355 zip codes and provides free admission to one person from April 1 – October 31. The cost is $20.  If you live within 11354 or 11355, you may purchase a CAP at the Garden beginning on March 1, 2010 by providing proof of residency, such as a utility or credit card bill, bank statement, state or federal identification, or other such proof.  You need not provide any personal information to purchase the CAP, simply prove that you live in 11354 or 11355.

I’d like to find out about membership.
As a member of Queens Botanical Garden, you may visit the Garden as often as you’d like for free. Membership also provides other exciting benefits such as free parking passes (based on the membership level), discounts on programs and at the QBG Store, as well as exclusive events such as the Annual Member Luncheon and Tour.
